L&E Court Case Continues PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 March 2010 20:24

Legal argument regarding costs allocation and access to tender documents pertinent to the validity of the EL6505 exploration licence resumed today in the Land & Environment Court.

There was a great deal of discussion as BHP fought very hard to prevent the Caroona Community from having access to the original tender documents.  We ask the question - what have BHP got to hide?

The case continues 26th March.

SOSLP invite The Premier Working Mum PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 February 2010 11:27
Knowing that Kristina Keneally loves her trips to the Bush and is a proud Working Mum, in common with many SOSLP members, the women of the district are writing to invite her to visit Caroona soonest.
We want her to see where NSW gets its Weet-Bix and toast from.  We want to show her how WE consistently deliver 40% more than any other foodbowl area in NSW.

We want her to understand how much our water supplies matter to the ecosystem, food production and towns people of this country region and that we value our unpolluted contribution to the MDB.

We want her to see what her government, through short term expediency, is preparing to put at irreparable risk.

Rally Raises Rights Issues in Canberra PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 09:10

Liverpool Plains farmers joined nearly 3000 other farmers and landholders in Canberra yesterday to protest about the erosion of freehold property rights.

Tony Abbott and Barnaby Joyce spoke to the farmers in front of Parliament House with Mr Abbott pledging that no party he was associated with would remove land rights without compensation.  In this election year, the current Agricultural Minister chose not to attend......

Gas Glut – CSM less loved PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 February 2010 08:00
With a glut of gas coming onto the market, huge upfront capital costs and wary customers, CSM projects, such as the one Santos hopes to exploit from the Liverpool Plains foodbowl area, are looking less economically viable than ever.

Financial viability and technical feasibility of CSM, and CSM for LNG in particular, has of course been questioned before by market analysts and other players in the LNG market, like Woodside's CEO.  Santos' response to these shakier market conditions has of course been a marketing splurge, including sponsorship of the Australian cycling Tour Down Under with Santos' latest tagline “Not just an energy company, a company with energy”.

Or more accurately: an aquifer-draining energy company with a low quality, polluting carbon source no one wants to buy! (Shhhhush don't tell the shareholders!!)

Tony Abbott makes Position Crystal Clear PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:49
On his way to visit Liverpool Plains farmer Cam McKellar, whose farm is "a world leader when it comes to carbon capture in soil", Tony Abbott MP had this to say against mining on the Liverpool Plains:
"Okay, well plainly the big issue as Senator Williams has just alluded to is the prospect or the threat, if you like, of mining in some of Australia’s best agricultural land. Now obviously we support the mining industry as we support the agricultural industry. It’s important that we have a strong agricultural sector just as it’s important that we have a strong mining sector. The message I am getting loud and clear from locals is that they don’t want to destroy this agricultural breadbasket with mining and the position that the Coalition parties have adopted in the federal parliament is that there is no way there should be any mining in this very important agricultural region until such time as a very, very thorough water study is done and we can be absolutely crystal clear that mining can take place without damaging the agricultural prospects of this region."
We thank Mr Abbott, Federal Liberals and Nationals for their support. (Full interview)

Farmer takes fight to miner - SMH

In maybe the final Mining Warden court hearings before being superseded by Land and Environment court, in Gunnedah earlier in April, BHP and their legal representatives confronted landholders, for access to their land .Santos has ramped up its seismic testing and its PR, inviting selected locals on a 'no photography' tour of its drilling rig at Caroona.

The State Government commissioned consulting firm 'road tested' proposed water study Terms of Reference in meetings mid March in Tamworth, Gunnedah and Narrabri.
The document was enthusiastically critiqued by community participants for its lack of balance, its time and new data collection constraints, its avoidance of risk management and its ultimate irrelevance to Government policy.

In the NSW parliament Minister MacDonald responded robustly to recent events.
